Babalawo, Awo or Obeah is the title denoting Yoruba priests Orunmila or Orula. The Orisha of wisdom operating through the system of Ifa divination. Orunmila is knower of past, present and future.
The Babalawo as a priest of Ifa, can predict the future and how to handle it through their communication with Orunmila. This is done through consulting Ifa divination chain Okpele call or calls ikin sacred seeds on the board of Ifa divination.
In Religion Santeria or Lukumi, the Babalawo or "father of secrets" or Awo, is recognized as a clergyman and acts as such in the community. Awo is a spiritual consultant to customers and those who must be assisted to meet his mentor and Orisha spiritual tradition started in the Orishas.
Traditionally, there are women in Ifa priests Iyanifa calls, although this does not occur in the diaspora.
The AWOS must maintain a training in memorization and interpretation of the 256 Oddus and numerous verses (esses) of Ifa. Traditionally, Babalawo have other professional specialties. As for example, can also be a great herbalist, while others specialize in eliminating problems caused by Ajogun. The Babalawo is trained in identifying problems and implementing solutions to the secular or spiritual resolve them. The Awo should help people develop discipline and character that support spiritual growth. This is accomplished through the identification of the client's spiritual destiny, called Ori and develop a spiritual path that can be used as a support to grow and live for that destination.
Since the spiritual development of others is in charge of Awo, it must focus on improving their own knowledge of life and set an example for others. The Awo not control your own behavior to higher standards of morality, may lose favor with the Orisha community and is judged on a harder than others.
Some AWOS are initiated as adolescents while others are learning as adults. The training and years of dedication to Ifa is the mark of the most educated and spiritually disadvantaged. This is why average Ifa initiates must train at least a decade before they are recognized as full Babalawos.
