Yoruba Pantheon

The Yorubas named, identified and deified the powers of nature and called Orishas, however, despite their diversity of deities may be considered as a monotheistic religion, since they consider to Olodumare as single omnipotent God. The Yoruba pantheon account with 401 different deities. The complexity of their cosmology has led Western scholars to compare the Yoruba society in ancient Greece, however, there is a big difference because in the Greco-Roman religion its main deity had characteristics associated with the Shango Yoruba, not becomes the supreme God.

adsensein The Yoruba supreme God, or Olorun Olodumare has no organized priesthood and temples in his honor, although it is invoked and asked his blessing. The Yoruba religion says that when a person dies, his soul enters the realm of the ancestors from which these continue to have influence over the land. That is why the cult of ancestors (eggun) plays an important role in Yoruba religion. Some are important Orishas Eshu, who rules the destiny Shango, the god of thunder and Ogoun, god of iron and modern technology.
The Yoruba religion varies significantly from one kingdom to another, the same deity may be male and female in a village in the next, which is why the same deities have various ways according to how you revere, but ultimately their essential characteristics are the same, so it may be the case that the characteristics of two gods can be included in a single deity. In summary, despite the multiplicity of deities, it is considered that the Yoruba religion is a monotheistic religion with a single omnipotent creator god who governs the universe, along with hundreds of minor deities, each with a specific power.

Because African slaves came to America could not freely practice their religion, they hid under their Gods multiplicity African Catholic saints according to a relationship where they sought similar characteristics between them. This resulted in a syncretism in the Yoruba diaspora, where today the same African deity can be called indifferently by his African name or Catholic, an example is Shango or Santa Barbara.
